In the age of digital speed, Avatar and cyber-shopping, it seems like everything is racing for the future.  Marc Jacobs on the other hand, brought Louis Vuitton’s Fall Ready to Wear collection back in the other direction.  The clothing had very conservative silhouettes. Super-elongated jackets, hair pulled back, faded vintage florals. A few country plaids.  The style evoked Chloe Sevigny’s character in HBO’s “Big Love” or a depression-era schoolteacher.  Colors were muted, dusty.  The shapes were still quite feminine, and a few pieces looked like the schoolmarm wanted to break out in the vintage patterned corset styling.

The handbags had some of the muted mustards.  Some of the quilted monagram pieces had dusty pastels that worked back to the clothing.  Some bags had very luxurious fur worked into the bag (I’m seeing a big comeback in fur across most of the Paris collections). Dark appliqued blocked florals were also seen on many of the handbags as well, with lace and hand-painted crocodile texture.

I’m happy to see other designs of Balenciaga besides their famous Motorcycle series. And I am happier as this bag is very pretty. Like the Giant City bags, this leather flap tote is also a neutral design, the shape is fine and the design is very simple. The gold push lock closure on the flap cover is a highlight as it brightens the a bit plain leather color and gives the bag a chic touch.

After 18 days in Europe (Milan for the shows, Madrid to lecture at Institute of European Design plus Lugano and London in between) with my 5 year old son I am SO glad to be home at my desk to just… blog.  I spent a lot of time looking at bags while in Europe at the shows and one thing is clear, embellished bags via chains, zippers and beading remain strong for Fall 2010.  While I love all three of these trends separately; I think it’s total overkill to have them on one single bag– especially when said bag is a slim 11″ clutch.  I am really over my initial Balmain-ia and this clutch confirms the brand is not a serious contender in the bag arena.  I also can not endorse the silly flower and heart charms which are apparently inspired by the charms on those hideous Croc shoes.  I mean if I wanted a DIY bag from my 9 year old goddaughter I would have asked her to make me one.  And it certainly would not cost ,120.  Balmain Night Pearl Leather Clutch at Net-a-porter here.

So for Fall 2010, Bottega has a new fabrication in which they made cellophane paper look like leather (it is woven together with leather). Just thought it’d be interesting to point out that that is the reverse of what they have here, leather woven to look like raffia (there is actual raffia woven in). Oh, Tomas you always keep us girls guessing! I just love the decadent concept, you know the fact that a raffia looking bag is actually 80. Of course, it is incredibly beautiful with the texture and color variations. The really cool part is that it still crinkles like raffia when you touch it. A minor novelty I know but it keeps the conversation going since you would have to make sure people knew it was in fact leather. At Net-a-Porter.

Seriously, with so many designers streaming live from their shows I’m thinking next season I will just park myself in front of my computer instead of killing myself traveling between New York and Europe. Yes it’s great fun to be at the actual show but you get a much better view from the live streaming (especially since LV has a special BAG CAM for close ups!) and you have no idea how exhausting it is to rush from show to show, especially in snow/rain/sleet.

I was invited to many shows in Paris including the Louis Vuitton show but decided to come home instead because I was feeling sick and my 5 year old was “all done” with Europe (he literally woke up one day and said “I’m all done with Italy and Switzerland, I want to go home”). I’ve not been a big fan of Dior bags of late, but I’m really loving what John Galliano has whipped up for fall. While it wasn’t a particularly bag heavy show, I am feeling his new soft, malleable hobo-inspired number complete with ample side ruching and slim CD logo affixed to the side (to be appreciated right?). Not only does it look roomy, but the long, slim adjustable side straps mean this bag will be fully adaptable to different arm lengths. While there were some more classic, structured bag shapes, I’m preferring this slouchy bell shape because it translates well for working women as well as soccer moms. It looks durable yet chic, capacious yet expensive. Judging by how it was worn on the runway, I prefer it held in the hand and not worn on the shoulder; the latter makes it look somewhat cumbersome (but that could also depend on the color). It’s not as editorial as I think magazine editors would like it to be, but for the modern woman, I think Dior has a hit on its hands.

Definitely one to add to your Ebay watch list, this large, pastel green bag by Luella is one of a dying breed of bags by the credit crunched designer. It’s a classic style that will work particularly well during the summer in this shade, and judging by the close-up photograph, still seems to have all of its crucial appendages intact.

If you’re looking for a cool, contemporary small-to-medium sized handbag, you could do a lot worse than to check out the current range at Anya Hindmarch. I particularly like this ‘Britt’ handbag, which is smooth, stylish and so very ‘now’ without labouring under too many obviously trendy bells and whistles.
